                         SHRI LAL BAHADUR SHASTRI



Shri Lal Bahadur Shastri was the second Prime Minister of  India. He was a true patriot and a great leader. He dedicated his life to the service for his country and her people.

Shri Shastri was born on October 2, 1904 in a poor family at Banaras. His father was a school teacher who died in young age.He went to school and then to Kashi Vidyapith for higher education. 

He began to take part in politics at an early age. He was a true follower of Gandhiji. He took an active part in India‘s struggle for freedom and went to jail eight times.

In 1952, he was made General Secretary of the Congress. Next year he was made Minister of Transport and Railways. In 1961, he became Minister of Home Affairs. After the death of Pandit Nehru, Shri Shastri was elected the second Prime Minister of India. Under his leadership our country gave a crushing defeat to Pakistan in 1965. He won hearts of his countymen by his firm resistance to aggression. 

He was peace-loving by nature. He went to Tashkent in Russia for peace talks. After signing the Tashkent Declaration he died of a sudden heart attack on January 11, 1966. India lost in him one of the greatest leaders of the world. Although he has died but his ideas and ideals are still alive. He is still a constant source of inspiration for the people of India. May his soul rest in peace.

It was he who gave us the popular slogan of “Jai Jawan. Jai Kisan”.
