PANDIT JAWAHAR LAL NEHRU
Pandit Jawahar Lal Nehru was one of the greatest men of the world. He was an eminent politician and statesman. He was the first Prime Minister of free India. He lived, worked and died for his motherland. Under his wise leadership India progressed by leaps and bounds in all fields of activity.

Jawahar Lal was born at Allahabad in 1889. His father Pt. Moti Lal Nehru was a famous lawyer. Young J awahar was brought up in the lap of luxury. In childhood he was educated by English tutors. At the age of fifteen he went to England for higher studies. After obtaining his degree in law he returned to India in 1912.

He started practice at Allahabad. But he was more interested in politics. He joined the Congress and began taking part in India’s struggle for freedom. In December 1929. in its historic session held at Lahore under his presidentship, the Congress proclaimed “Puran Sawaraj” as its ultimate goal.

India became free on August 15, 1947. On that day he, as first Prime Minister of India, hoisted the Tricolour on the Red Fort. He was a great orator and writer also. Some of his famous works are ‘The Discovery of India‘, ‘Glimpses of World History” and ‘Letters to a Daughter’. He shaped the non-alignment policy of India and established peace among nations. He died of heart attack on May 27, 1964. India lost in him one of the greatest .leaders of the world. May his soul rest in peace ! He is . still a constant source of inspiration for the people of India. Although he has died, his ideas and ideals are still alive.
